A deep tissue massage is a massage that targets and addresses a specific area of the body where there are muscles, tendon, or joint pain. This is not a relaxation massage, though we never make it uncomfortable!  The use of heat, cold, various tools, and special oils, or applications is common.  Alertness and frequent movement by the client is involved as they are asked to respond with movement or pressure to the Therapist. The therapist uses a pain scale from 1-10 (10 being the most pain experienced) that allows you to control the amount of pressure used and we ask that you never go over a 5 to avoid tissue damage. This massage time may vary depending on the work required and the client’s tolerance. This may require undressing depending on the area of injury. It is performed on a massage table with dressing to protect your modesty. Homework tasks are assigned to help with recovery.

Effects:

Usually, in coordination with the Chiropractor, it is designed for recovery of traumas, strains, sprains, or repetitive use injury. The therapist works closely with the Dr. to help target your particular area of pain or restrictions. This may include Personal Injury cases in the event of car crashes, work injuries, or accidents. This type of massage integrates a combination of techniques from different modalities such as Trigger Point Work, Neuromuscular Therapy, Sports Massage, Acupressure, and various types of stretching dependent on client needs and condition.

Benefits:

The deep work performed in this massage is medical, aimed to address specific issues. This is neither a full body massage nor a relaxation massage.  Deep work removes adhesions, loosens scar tissue, and increases mobility by making tissue more fluid and pliable. It specifically reduces connective tissue abnormalities and dysfunction. We are attempting to get you back to your life functioning pain free!

Contraindications:

Pregnancy, some stages of diabetes, easy bruising, uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, and any drugs or conditions that cause blood to be thin or not clot or other circulation problems. Also, if there are active infections such as a viral or bacterial infection, we would not recommend this type of work. Speak to your Dr., if in doubt and your therapist upon scheduling your appointment.
